John Cordts is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience in mental health services, providing therapy and counseling to diverse clients in the southern California area. John holds a Master’s degree in Counseling, with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy, from California State University, Fullerton, as well as a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. In the
interim between these educational and training experiences, John completed advanced graduate studies in East-West Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. These studies, which integrated traditional Western psychology with the wisdom and practices of
Eastern spirituality, culminated in published research on the relationship between meanings from dream sleep and current concerns in individuals’ lives.
John specializes in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions in adults from all age groups. Over the course of many years of providing therapy services using
traditional methods, he has developed a newly found and effective focus on the integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness-based interventions and practices. He now holds a certificate in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and has had recent clinical training in the innovative and versatile approach known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
John’s therapeutic philosophy is a s ynthesis of humanistic (or client-centered), existential, and transpersonal (mind-body-spirit) perspectives. His work is rooted firmly in the following beliefs: in the unconditional worth of each person; in the necessity for each individual to discover values, meaning and purpose; and in the human capacity to transcend suffering and move forward with committed action in the direction of healing and growth. Each person is on their own unique
journey through life. Helping clients to experience healing and to achieve growth is John’s personal mission. John practices wellness in his own life through meditation, exercise, and
experiencing the abundance of beauty and serenity found in nature.
